Butter Tart Shortbread Squares w/ Walnuts

Butter Tart Shortbread Squares w/ Walnuts


  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup icing sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter
  • Filling
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder


  1. Heat oven to 350F.
  2. Sift dry ingredients and grate cold butter into mixture. Blend by hand or with pastry blender until butter is fully incorporated and mixture is crumbly. Press into the bottom of 9” x 9” baking dish. Bake crust for 20 minutes or until golden and evenly set. Let cool.
  3. Spread walnuts over cooled crust. Blend butter and sugar together, then incorporate eggs one at a time. Stir in corn syrup and vanilla. Add flour and baking powder and stir again until mixture is smooth. Pour mixture over top of walnuts on crust, spreading to the edges of the pan. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes until completely set and top is golden to dark brown. Cool thoroughly before slicing. Makes about 16.
